Throughout this module I think I’ve developed a confidence to try new media and step outside my usual way of working. In September I was very much working solely in Fineliner and I’m happy that I’m not anymore, I’ve developed skills in dip pen and ink, found a love for dry brushing and developed printing skills such as etching, mono-printing and screen-printing too. I’ve found that through visual language I’ve transferred this across to other modules and my personal work. I think I’ve become braver.
I struggle with creating images of scenes and landscapes, much preferring self-contained compositions. In this module I’ve learnt that depth and line of sight don’t have to be landscapes. I still find it very hard but I’ve learnt how to improve my work. I think I’m approaching compositions differently and understand why some work and some don’t, such as having elements slightly touching can create a sense of something not being quite right, I’m glad I know the reasons behind this now so I can rectify this in my work.
I think my main strength throughout this module has been the development of my practice. At the beginning of the year I was very set in my way of working and through looking at images differently and the possibilities of making them in new ways have made my work stronger and more tactile. Sticking to one subject allowed a full exploration and looking back I am able to see a linear development of my work. I think my work has become more adaptable, I find I am able to change my work to suit briefs better rather than doing what I feel comfortable doing. This has made my work more effective. The areas I think I could improve within this module are sketchbook development, I get stuck on ideas a lot of the time meaning I don’t explore other lines of enquiry. By extension of this, I could expand on my work a lot of the time, rather than settling on something and moving on. I wish I was the type of person that can draw and redraw the same thing and produce pages upon pages of thumbnails and present a cleverly conceived idea but It is something I find incredibly difficult. I think sometimes this means I don’t produce the best work I can, I find this especially applies to composition as I rely on the part of composing an image that is intuitive.
I think this module has helped me pin down reasons why an image doesn’t work, whereas before I could tell something wasn’t right but couldn’t always understand why. Through the aid of the weekly handouts I have been to able to follow some guidelines of composition and image which I’ve found myself almost unconsciously applying to my practice. It has become more comfortable to create images. Overall this module has played the biggest part of this year for me, as it has helped me fall back in love with making images, although a lot of the work could have been executed better I acknowledge this and feel I have learnt a lot from it.
